National Register of Historic Places Hearing for Fairfax Theatre

Fairfax Theatre 1920x1080.png

Friday, July 30, 2021 at 9:00 AM PT, the Fairfax Theatre will be presented to the California State Commission, the group that determines National Register of Historic Places designation. Board Member Steve Luftman will facilitate the presentation. (This is a different designation than the local Los Angeles Cultural Historic Monument status we are seeking simultaneously.)

The Fairfax Theatre is just one item on the Commission’s agenda. We don’t know the precise time that the Fairfax Theatre will be presented, but the agenda shows how many other items come before it. If you are able to tune in, you can check periodically to see when the Fairfax Theatre comes up.

To speak, you have to pre-register. Be sure that you have read the nomination or that you attend our free presentation on July 25 at 5:00 PM PT, so you understand the criteria for which the building fits the CULTURAL HERITAGE profile for eligibility.

The key point is the theater’s significant contribution to the development of the Jewish community in the Beverly/Fairfax area, starting in the early 1930s. The theater itself was built in 1930.

If you grew up in the neighborhood and were part of the Jewish community there, that is what the Commission would like to hear about. Especially if you were there or had parents/grandparents living there in the 1940 and 50s as the area was becoming populated with Holocaust survivors.

The meeting agenda and other instructions can be found here.

The SHRC invites comments on the nominations from the public either in writing or at the July 30, 2021 meeting. Written comments can be sent to State Historical Resources Commission, 1725 23rd St, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95816-7100 or to calshpo.shrc@parks.ca.gov and must be submitted by 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.
