ABOUT THE ART DECO SOCIETY OF LOS ANGELES FASHION COMMITTEE:

Q.: What is the mission of the ADSLA’s Fashion Committee?

A.:  The ADSLA Fashion Committee’s purpose is to exhibit, highlight, and educate about the aesthetics of fashion during the Deco / Streamline Moderne era, and about the influence of Art Deco itself on wearable designs.  Within that scope, we also offer knowledge and suggestions to individuals who wish to dress in vintage or retro styles at Art Deco Society of Los Angeles events.

Q.: Who are the members of the Fashion Committee?

A.: We are a diverse group of people united by our common love and knowledge of wearable fashions from the Art Deco / Streamline Moderne Era: the 1920s through the 1940s.  As members of the Fashion Committee, we share our interest and knowledge via online articles, live and prerecorded talks, and fashion shows.  We also interact with Art Deco Society of Los Angeles members and guests at our events.

Q.: Who is our audience?

A.: When it comes to wearable fashion, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles’ members and guests tend to fall into three broad categories: (1.) Individuals who choose not to dress in vintage or repro / retro outfits. (2.) Individuals who wish to dress in vintage or repro / retro outfits, but don’t know how to obtain and / or combine them.  (3.) Individuals who already dress in vintage or repro / retro outfits, with varying degrees of period authenticity (by intention or not).

As representatives of our committee and of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles in general, we are committed to treat each and every Society member and guest with kindness, respect, and goodwill.  To individuals who indicate that they’d like us to share our knowledge and advice with them, we freely do so in a friendly, positive, and constructive way.  To all, regardless of their level of interest, we strive to make them feel welcome and appreciated at our events.

Q.: Are ADSLA members and guests expected to dress as we do?

A.: At ADSLA events, we dress in vintage Deco styles to express our individual selves and to bring smiles and enjoyment to those who see us.  We do not try to compete with anyone else, nor do we wish to make anyone feel inadequate.  Rather than judge our fellow Deco aficionados, we embrace their interest, attendance, and participation.
