A Toast to Los Angeles Art Deco Architecture

A TOAST TO ART DECO ARCHITECTURE.png

Join us virtually to kick off Preservation Month with a toast to Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architectural style in a variety of Los Angeles neighborhoods - from Vernon and Southgate - Long Beach to Glendale and everything in between! We'll see an ornate Art Deco former candy factory, Deco apartments, a retired airport, a Moderne shopping center in Crenshaw, several schools that "graduated" in Art Deco, a handful of hospitals, churches and more! The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles has invited some of the city’s most dedicated 1920s and 30s architecture Instagrammers to present a selection of gems they’ve discovered in their explorations.

Because admiring mouth-watering Art Deco architecture infused with Los Angeles cultural history can make you thirsty, we’ve challenged Vance Daniels of Beelman’s (named for architect Claud Beelman) to create and demonstrate a few cocktails that pay homage to Los Angeles Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture! Vance will shake and stir in between some of these mini-presentations. An ingredient list will be supplied in advance, if you want to mix along at home.

Our talent roster includes six unique personalities bonded by a fascination with Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture: Art Deco Boggs, Art Deco Dude, Antonio of Deco Index, Swapmeet Chronicles Victoria Moore and Rory Cunningham, former President of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. Our presenters will discuss their techniques for documenting the city, researching buildings and most importantly, how they became “distracted by Deco!”

This program is free to members and non-members, but you must register. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

This event is tied to our 31 Days of Deco initiative. In May, we are committed to post Art Deco and Streamline Moderne Architecture daily on social media and we want you to join us, to turn social media Art Deco!

We all know the grand movie palaces and skyscrapers, but our aim is to discover astonishing specimens that are off the beaten path. Maybe even a building worthy of being our next candidate for an historic cultural monument nomination!

Our goal is to inspire you to get out on the street in the Greater Los Angeles area with a camera (any camera will do) to #ShowUsYourArtDeco

Make a plan to investigate the cool Art Deco building you always drive by. Wander past the Streamline Moderne apartment building you’ve long admired. Take a picture, write a caption that includes the name of the city and/or neighborhood and any facts you can locate about the building, use our hashtags, TAG US and POST on your social media account(s)!

That’s all you have to do to help raise awareness for Art Deco in Los Angeles’ many neighborhoods. We are committed to posting every day in May, so don’t be surprised if some of those posts involve reposting you! Click below to find us on these platforms.
