The 1929 Mountain States Life/Yucca Tower building has been submitted to the City of Los Angeles for consideration as an Historic Cultural Monument. We are now in the phase of this quest, where the Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee has to vote. The case for building will be heard on Tuesday, May 21 at a 2:00 PM meeting that is in person, however, you can write a comment BEFORE the meeting and you can listen to the meeting. See below for more information.

The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles goes through a nomination process for buildings that we identify as being “historically significant.” We are now in phase three of this process with the Art Deco Mountain States Life Building/Yucca Tower in Hollywood. We need YOUR PARTICIPATION to achieve a preservation victory. Please read on.

To be effective, we need the public to get behind our nomination, by writing letters of support to key decision-makers and advisors in this process and/or appearing to express encouragement to the city to landmark the building.

We have our Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) hearing scheduled on Tuesday, May 21 at 2:00 PM. Please support our nomination of the Art Deco Mountain States Life / Yucca Tower building by sending an email to PLUM or appearing in person to speak at the meeting.

If you are unable to appear at this meeting, you may submit your comments in writing at least 24 hours prior to the hearing (earlier is better). Written comments may be submitted through the Public Comment Portal:

You will need to enter the council file number: 24-0510

This is where all public comments will appear. Sometimes the portal doesn't work and you have to try again.

SAMPLE LETTER:

I support the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles' nomination of the Mountain States Life Building/Yucca Vine Tower designed by one of our great architects Henry L. Gogerty. This 1929 Art Deco building was one of Hollywood’s earliest skyscrapers. The eight-story tower adorned with classical sculpture, contributed to the development of the Hollywood-Vine commercial district and was essential to the city’s “Five-Finger Plan.” Please vote to designate this building a Cultural Historic Monument. Historic structures are becoming scarcer in Los Angeles. It is time to act to preserve what is left of our cultural and architectural heritage.

If you have taken our Art Deco Hollywood Boulevard tour, then you've seen this glorious white tower just north of Hollywood Boulevard at Vine Street. To our surprise, it had never been landmarked, so we are giving it a go now!

Please write a letter to the PLUM Committee by Monday, May 20 at 2PM to express your support. Use the website address in the 2nd paragraph above to submit your comments.
