SOLD OUT! This event is sold out, but you can enjoy the exhibit on another regular day through June 9. See the Hollywood Heritage website for information.
Meet the Stars: 100 Years of MGM Studios and the Golden Age of Hollywood celebrates the centennial anniversary of MGM, the studio that made some of the most enduring motion pictures, such as 1939's dazzling Technicolor fantasy-musical, THE WIZARD OF OZ and revered silents BEN-HUR and THE BIG PARADE (both 1925).
It’s vintage Hollywood overload at the Hollywood Heritage Museum with over 20 Costumes, jewelry, contracts, personal items (John Gilbert's Russian dagger, Jean Harlow’s Art Deco cigarette box, Mae West and Carole Lombard’s jewelry, hats and more!), marketing materials, gorgeous original posters, artwork, oodles of rare photos and more - bringing the stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood to life. Meet everyone from silent film heart throbs to MGM's leading dancers in its lavish musicals.
The exhibition culls from the private collections of over 20 motion picture memorabilia collectors to exhibit artifacts of the Golden Age of Hollywood - many items unseen for decades!
Our visit will include a “then” and “now” exhibition of the Streamline Moderne architecture of MGM Studios, a special private tour of the exhibit with the curators Angie Schneider and Darin Barnes and some of the historian/collectors (several who are ADSLA members!) and a wine and nibbles reception. Scheduled to appear with the exhibit are Costume Collector Greg Schreiner, Jean Harlow expert Darrell Rooney and Collectors/Historians Nicole and Nathan Marsak, plus more TBA.
A sample of highlights include Lewis Stone’s elaborate historical costume from QUEEN CHRISTINA (1933), Rex rabbit fur sleeves worn by Jean Harlow in 1933 to Hal Roach’s 20th anniversary party, the gates of Jane Russell’s childhood home, Judy Garland’s blouse from MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944), Shirley Temple’s costume from THE BLUE BIRD (1940), Carmen Miranda’s hat and strawberries from THE GANG’S ALL HERE (1943), Eve Arden’s sequined leotard from AT THE CIRCUS (1939), the guest register from the premiere of GRAND HOTEL (1932), Mae Murray’s Makeup Kit and two rare paintings. The Jean Harlow “Farewell to Earth” painting by Tinto Costa was commissioned by her mother after her untimely death in 1937, while the Hedy LaMarr 1937 painting “Scorpio,” is the work of actor Reginald Gardiner who was dating LaMarr at the time.
Expect to see costumes and personal effects of such Golden Age celebrities as Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Marion Davies, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, Jean Harlow, Sonja Henie, Dorothy Lamour, Hedy LaMarr, Ann Miller, Mae Murray, William Powell, Tyrone Power, Jane Russell, Barbara Stanwyck, Shirley Temple, Johnny Weismuller, Esther Williams and many more.
