Join Hollywood Heritage in celebrating the 100th anniversary of opening night at Sid Grauman’s Hollywood Egyptian Theatre, with a special one night only exhibit and refreshments to celebrate this important centennial! All ticket buyers will receive a special commemorative pin. Bring your memories of the Egyptian Theatre to the event and share them on camera in our storytelling booth.
The Egyptian Theatre is still under renovation, so festivities are at the Hollywood Heritage Museum, set amidst a variety of actual artifacts from the 1922 movie palace - the first of its kind on Hollywood Boulevard. The extensive exhibit will include items from the Hollywood Heritage collection, as well as material from other collectors from 1922 to the end of the MGM roadshow period.
The exhibit will also highlight the pioneers who contributed to the success of Grauman's Hollywood theatres. Our own Jesse L. Lasky eventually became a business partner to Grauman with Famous Players Lasky investing in Grauman's theaters However, their first encounter went back to San Francisco in the early days of the 20th century when Grauman's father D.J. booked The Musical Laskys, young Jesse L. Lasky and his sister Blanche at his theater. Cecil B. DeMille (whose 1923 THE TEN COMMANDMENTS found the perfect venue at the Egyptian Theatre), Douglas Fairbanks (whose ROBIN HOOD opened the theater) and Mary Pickford (SPARROWS, 1926) and Charlie Chaplin (THE GOLD RUSH, 1925). Lest we forget developer Charles Toberman who enticed Sid to Hollywood.
This event is only open to the members of Hollywood Heritage, Los Angeles Conservancy and the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. Membership will be verified.
