Cocktails in Historic Places® at Garçons de Café

  • Garçons de Café 541 South Spring Street, Unit 114 Los Angeles, CA, 90013 United States (map)

Join us for our next Cocktails in Historic Places® when the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles gathers at the Spring Arcade Building—a 1924 architectural jewel once designed as a grand pedestrian passage for the city’s financial elite.

Originally conceived as a place to move, meet, and be seen, the arcade comes alive once more as we gather beneath its vaulted corridors—this time with cocktails in hand. In partnership with Garçons de Café, we channel the spirit of a European café set within the rhythm of Downtown Los Angeles.

As always, Cocktails in Historic Places® invites you to step inside the past—not as a spectator, but as part of the living scene.

We don’t just visit history—we drink in it.

We look forward to conversations about historic Los Angeles, vintage clothing and cars, home restorations and all things Jazz Age!

About the Food & Beverage:

Garçons de Café is well-known for its extensive wine list representing curated selections from around the world. In an adjoining space next door is l’Appart, a French Bistro serving duck, escargot, Beef Bourguignon, pizzas and more under the direction of Chef Thierry Babet. The restaurant does take reservations and food is also served in the bar..

What You Should Know:

This gathering is free to attend, but you are on the hook for food and beverage you wish to consume.

Vintage or vintage-inspired attire preferred, but not required. Festive attire is encouraged—this is an evening for elegance, atmosphere, and connection.

About Cocktails in Historic Places®

Traditionally, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles members gather once a month in an historic building with a bar, to socialize and revel in the beauty of historic architecture. It is our duty to patronize businesses in historic buildings! We welcome interested persons to join us. This no-host cocktail gathering is open to members and non-members alike, and no reservations are required to attend, but we do encourage dinner reservations if the establishment will make them.

Spring Arcade Building — 1924

The Spring Arcade Building, completed in 1924 and designed by Kenneth MacDonald Jr., is a historic commercial structure in Downtown Los Angeles. Built during a period when Spring Street was a major financial and commercial corridor, the building was conceived as a pedestrian arcade connecting Spring Street to Broadway.

Inspired by European shopping passages, the structure consists of interconnected buildings linked by a covered interior corridor lined with retail spaces. It provided a protected walkway for pedestrians while supporting the surrounding commercial district.

Following decades of decline in downtown activity, the building was renovated in the 2010s and adapted for mixed use, including residential, retail, and hospitality spaces. Today, businesses such as Garçons de Café contribute to the building’s continued use as a social and commercial gathering place.

Just steps from here, Spring Street was already alive with financial activity—as seen in images like the crowds gathered at the All Night and Day Bank in 1910..
