Vintage Bazaar: 1920 - 1960

  • IATSE Local 80 Soundstage 2520 West Olive Avenue Burbank, CA, 91505 United States (map)

The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles presents a two day vintage marketplace focused on authentic and reproduction men’s and women’s vintage apparel and accessories appropriate to wear to ADSLA’s signature event, the elegant Avalon Ball (May 16) on Catalina Island.

In addition to true vintage day and evening wear, shoppers will find hats, Art Deco era jewelry, shoes, handbags and more from 1920 - 1960.

We are excited to announce that several seminars and demonstrations will be presented by experts in vintage style. Gabriela Hernandez of Bésame Cosmetics will present a lecture on Vintage Makeup based on her book Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup and Benny Reese of Reese’s Pieces will offer a lively seminar on vintage menswear looks for the Avalon Ball. For ladies aspiring to put together vintage inspired looks for the Ball from modern pieces, there will be a fashion talk with live models and resources for finding a wardrobe worthy of Gloria Swanson!

Plus, you can book an appointment with a professional makeup artist to transform into a flapper, vamp, Hollywood screen siren or a vintage gentleman! These mini-makeovers will be offered Saturday by advance registration.

When you shop at our sale you are benefiting our non-profit’s work in education and historic preservation!

Tickets are valid for BOTH days when you leave your wristband on. Your ticket will say March 28 on it, but it can be used on Sunday as well. You can come either day or both with one ticket/wristband.

LADIES FASHION DEMO: APPROXIMATED A VINTAGE LOOK FROM MODERN CLOTHING

When you’re new to attending vintage events and want a stress free look, you can put together an outfit from thrifted and internet finds that follows the shapes and styles of 1920s and 30s fashion. It’s all about education and knowing where to look and what to look for. The key is understanding the trends for each decade and embracing the fact the fashion was fluid, just like today, so looks don’t have to be super specific, just loosely suited for giving a feel for the decade.

Today, we’ll be demonstrating a few looks from the 1920s through the 40s that work to attend most Art Deco Society and vintage themed events. All items were thrifted or retail discovered within the last year. Some have been altered and paired with sewn items – although modern interpretations of the sewn items are easy to source with modern “close enough” styles through online and possibly other thrifted finds. While the looks are not necessarily strictly period – there are enough elements in each to give the right vibe. Several pieces can be used to build on – while others can be a stopgap as you build your dream wardrobe adding vintage, sewn, and altered garments and accessories (beware, this is addicting)!

This is a free program with purchase of regular Bazaar admission. You do not need to sign up in advance. Seating and standing room near the stage will be limited, so grab a spot early if you want a front row seat.

There is a surface parking lot in front of the building which will fill quickly. There are two parking structures next door that are part of a healthcare complex.
