Welcome to the Inaugural Makers Group VIRTUAL Workshop presented by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles!
We are so excited to kick off the new year with a fun, easy sewing project and a how to create an Art Deco-themed delicious libation!
For this first class in the “vintage art of sewing,” we are keeping it simple and social with a beginner friendly project. Make one or more Cloth Covered Cork Coaster and enjoy it with a delightful Art Deco style cocktail “The Eye of the Needle!”
This online program will give you a chance to meet new creatives, as well as the people behind the Makers Group, who have been busy behind the scenes to build and launch this new series.
Part 1: Cut and Sew a Coaster! In this class Bree Wardlow will guide us in cutting and hand stitching squares of cotton fabric, with a cork insert, and finishing with trimming the edges with pinking shears, or a blanket stitch to prevent fraying.
Part 2: Cocktail Time And Show Off Your Coasters! Next we welcome Luis Rodriguez of GiggleWaterH2o and ADSLA board member, a master mixologist, to show us how to craft a beautifully thematic cocktail! The recipe will be provided beforehand so you can Mix Along with Luis. The cocktail ingredients will be sent to ticket buyers.
These coasters are a perfect way to make use of scraps from other projects, or from a small purchase of printed and solid cottons. A set of 4 to 6 coasters can be cut from two "Fat Quarters' of quilting cotton. The skills covered include measuring and marking fabric, cutting, threading a needle, basic hand stitches, tying knots in thread. Everybody should have enough time to complete 1 coaster in class (more if you are a quick stitcher).
Please join us for a lovely evening of conviviality with crafts, cocktails and meeting fellow Art Deco aficionados! You are welcome to register to simply watch. You do not have to make a coaster.
MATERIALS:
Materials will be purchased on your own. The cost of the class only includes the cost of instruction. The approximate cost of materials to participate ranges between $0 and $40 , depending on what you have on hand. You may also choose to borrow tools if you are not sure that you want to invest.
MATERIALS LIST:
Paper or cardstock: This will be used for a simple pattern or template of a square measuring 5 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches, or 14 by 14cm.
Fabric: Cotton or poly/cotton blend flat woven material is best. Please avoid slinky, stretchy, or velvet type fabrics. Quilting cotton is ideal. Offcuts from previous projects are also great! Each coaster requires 2 squares of fabric measuring 5 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches, or 14 cm by 14 cm. A set of 4-6 coasters can be cut from a 1/2 yard yard of 1 fabric, or 2 "fat quarters" of coordinating/contrasting fabric. (there will be some left over fabric with either of these options)
Coaster Cork Squares: 4 inch by 4 inch, or 10 cm by 10 cm. (also- if you have some of these coasters at home that you are tired of, feel free to use them!) Please get the plain cork option, not the sticky backed. You will need one for each coaster you make.
Scissors: 6 to 8 inch fabric scissors, or a new pair of craft scissors will cut fabric just fine.
Thread or Embroidery Floss: Consider a contrast color, in embroidery thread, but use what pleases you.
Hand Sewing Needles: if you opt for Embroidery Floss, ensure your needles are large enough for it to thread the eye. You can often get a package with multiple sizes.
Ruler: The clear view or "quilting" rulers are easy to use, but metal or wood are fine too. 12 inch, or 30-35 cm length is great for this project.
Pencil/Tailors Chalk/Heat Erase Pen: Something that will be visible on your fabric to mark cutting and stitching lines.
Pins or Sewing Clips: the clips are great if you are working around pets or children.
Pinking Shears: these are the fastest option for edge finishing, but they are optional.
Rotary/Roller Cutter and Mat: (optional) Used for cutting fabric pieces, if this is your preferred method. You can also cut on a hard surface like a smooth table or floor with scissors.
Beeswax or Thread Conditioner: optional, but I prefer hand sewing with this, as it helps keep my thread from tangling.
Thimble: (optional) some people love them for hand work, some don't! Many options available- including soft "rubber" styles, and stick on pads, as well as the classic metal or ceramic ones.
Needle Threader: (optional) Super handy helper tool
RESOURCES:
Lucky you if you still have a neighborhood fabric store that can help you with your shopping list. If not, there are online sources below. You may want to search “Basic Sewing Kit” to find a bundle with basic supplies in it if you are starting from scratch. It is super important to get a good pair of fabric scissors.
www.Wawak.com sewing supplies- scissors, pinking shears, needles, thread, rulers, marking items, pins, sewing clips, thread conditioner, thimbles.
www.SewingPartsOnline.com Sewing supplies as above, plus fabrics- cottons in print and solid, they do offer "fat quarters".
www.Spoonflowercom Fabrics- print on demand- millions of prints available, Petal Signature Cotton is their quilting weight option, and they do offer "fat quarters".
www.DIYCraftWarehouse.com Coaster Cork Squares, sold individually
www.Amazon.com Sewing supplies, as above, fabrics, and coaster cork squares (in packs of 12 or more).
Additionally, thrift shops, yard sales and Etsy.com can be a great resource for sewing supplies and tools, as well as fabrics! Friends who sew probably have a stash of fabric they would be willing to part with in a length that will be sufficient for these coasters.
