April 2021 has been declared “World Art Deco Month” by Art Deco International. The organization will host a diverse menu of online events and, where practical, in-person events - all designed to showcase the many aspects of the Art Deco style in architecture, design and entertainment.
Art Deco International has designated April 28 as “World Art Deco Day,” to commemorate the date in 1925 when the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts opened its doors to the public in Paris. It was this event that inspired the term “Art Deco” to describe this Jazz Age design style. The United States famously refused the invitation to participate, claiming to have nothing to contribute. Now, nearly 100 years later, we have no intention to sit this one out! ADSLA’s program is on April 25, spotlighting Los Angeles’ lost Art Deco black and gold Richfield Oil Building with historian Nathan Marsak. The goal of “World Art Deco Day” is to raise the visibility of the many member societies by bringing attention to educational, preservation and social activities being regularly carried out.
Art Deco International is the operating name of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS), a global consortium of more than thirty organizations focused on Art Deco architecture and design. Founded in 1991, Art Deco International members societies are drawn from Europe, North and South America, Australasia, and the Asia Pacific region. Art Deco design was popular all around the world in the first half of the 20th century and continues to have a strong influence on everything from fashion to furniture, including industrial design, architecture, film and advertising.
For the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, ICADS will hold a World Congress in Paris, France. One of the events this month is a preview of that event with the president of the Paris Art Deco Society.
Ticketing/registration for these events is through the individual host organizations.
