The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles returns to Southwestern Law School, housed in the historic 1929 Bullocks Wilshire Building (3050 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90010), to present a live vintage fashion event, “Hollywood Deco: Art Deco Costume From Film and Stage” with a special tribute to Art Deco artist Erté, whose final costume designs for the opulent stage production “Stardust,” will be shown.

The movie themed showcase of extravagant costumes exhibited on live models, will take place on the weekend of this year’s Oscars. The show features costumes created during the Art Deco period, as well as those imagined for later productions set during the Jazz Age. Slated to step off the silver screen and onto our runway are dazzling costumes worn by Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, Jean Harlow, Rita Hayworth, Jeanette McDonald and Julie Andrews among others. These lavish screen and stage-worn costumes are all from the personal collection of Greg Schreiner and are a rare treat to see brought to life. In addition, there will be tours of the building and an opportunity to shop at Bullocks Wilshire for the first time in decades, in our vintage marketplace! Guests may even be able to pick up a vintage item with a Bullocks Wilshire label from a vendor.

Irene Salon fitting.

Travel back in time to the Golden Age of Hollywood with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles - for one fabulous vintage day, at Bullocks Wilshire, the city's leading luxury department store where the stars themselves shopped! Bullocks Wilshire traditionally showed the latest fashions to its high society clientele, on live models, so our costume extravaganza is a nod to that practice. The show includes costumes by designer Irene, who had a consumer salon at Bullocks Wilshire, and the artist Erté whose work defined Art Deco style in fashion illustration, design and costuming. His final work in his signature showstopping Art Deco style, for the 1992 stage production of “Stardust,” will be shown on our runway.

In the Louis XVI room, models will circulate in a narrated fashion show with live musical accompaniment, that promises to illuminate attendees about the designers, the movies, the stars who wore the costumes and the history of the Bullocks Wilshire building itself. Historically, shopping at such an opulent establishment required dressing for the occasion. Attendees are encouraged to wear vintage or vintage-inspired daywear such as suits or dresses.

 Bullocks Wilshire Building

Bullocks Wilshire had a department for everything, including accessories for the pampered pet, sold in the "Doggery." Movie stars flocked to Bullocks Wilshire, such as Mae West, (who reportedly had merchandise brought out to her car for inspection and approval), Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich to name a few of Hollywood's famous clients of the Art Deco era. The building was completed in 1929 as a luxury department store for owner John G. Bullock and is Los Angeles Cultural Historic Monument #56 and on the National Registry of Historic Places. Through the work of preservationists and Southwestern Law School, this incredibly special building is still ours to enjoy!

Southwestern Law School acquired the property in 1994 and embarked on a brilliant adaptive re-use of the building as their law library - while keeping many features of the interior intact. As with any historic building, ongoing restoration is required. This event will raise money for this purpose. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles encourages this type of adaptive re-use of historic buildings. The law school has kept a lot of the original interiors intact, allowing this 1929 Parkinson and Parkinson work of art to be able to be studied and appreciated today.
